June 24, 2009

Dear Friends,

This summer we will be looking at biblical images of the church, one of which is clearly exemplified by us in Southminster, FAMILY. One of the qualities of family is that when things need to be done, everyone pulls together. A storm blew though here on Friday, cutting power to much of south Glen Ellyn, Southminster included. Power was not returned until 4:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon. It was a very real hardship for many, with refrigerators defrosting; no air conditioning in very warm weather, and yards to be cleaned up, but it’s an ill wind that blows no good. Because there was no power at the church Sunday morning, we worshiped in the Memorial Garden. It was a great blessing to see everyone pull together on Sunday. Together, we moved the piano, chairs, hymnals and the PADS pennies (over 400 pounds worth) outside for the worship service. Afterwards, people pulled together to put everything away, and during fellowship I saw folks moving limbs from the yard to the chipping pile. Others have come by this week to lend a hand. Even the Rogers called from South Africa to hear about our weather. Family checks on each other in times of need.

Did you know that Southminster’s land was bought from the Schultz family? We are built on the old Schultz family farm. The oldest tree on the farm was the old mulberry tree that is by the handicap parking on the lower level. There is an old well pump by the original sanctuary entrance. It gives me quite a picture. We are a family that at one point raised food for people, now we give out grace, the nourishment that feeds the soul. We are a family that reaches out one another in times of need, as we did after the storm. We are a family that reaches out to others in their times of need, as we have done with our special PADS collection. Sunday was a picture of a family pulling together and a family reaching out as we worshiped outside and as we shared our pennies with the PADS. Take it from here,

Love, Wendy

Did you know...?
... that not only regularly elected delegates are invited to general assembly, but there are advisory delegates also? One group is the seminary advisory delegates (SAD), two seminarians from each seminary that has a connection with the PCUSA and another group is the youth advisory delegates (YAD). Their travel is paid for by the General Assembly. Chicago Presbytery is looking, right now, for YADs for the 2010 General Assembly which will take place in June. If you are interested or know someone who is interested please give Wendy a call and she would be glad to give you more information. There will be a session meeting July 5 following worship to make recommendations to the nominating committee of Chicago Presbytery.

June 17, 2009

Dear Friends,

I shocked folks at session last night when I said, “I hate Angels!” There was a silence, and a long pause, until I said, “No, the baseball team.” I have been a Dodger fan ever since I was a little girl in L.A. Of course, you all know about team loyalty. A friend of mine, Blake Severson, told me that God’s team was the Cubs because they know about hope, grace, and forgiveness. I asked Tom Frey why he was a Sox fan. He said, “Because they win!” Obviously, in Tom’s mind the Cubs need to know about hope, grace, and forgiveness. God loves both teams, and just wants them to play their best. So, last night, when the Sox vs. Cubs game was rained out, I remembered that wonderful bible verse. “The rain falls on the just and the unjust” God’s grace is poured out for all of us. May we remember in our dealings with not only our sisters and brothers in faith, but everyone that God’s love and grace is available to all. Take it from here! Play ball!

Love, Wendy

Did you know...?
...that the founder of “Trick or Treat for UNICEF” was a Presbyterian? He passed away this past spring. Read below:

Rarely are we given an opportunity to pay tribute to an individual who has had as profound an impact on UNICEF's work as Reverend Clyde Allison of Lowell, Indiana.

In 1950, the pain of World War II was still fresh in the minds of Americans as the world struggled to heal and rebuild. At that time, Reverend Allison was responsible for creating the Sunday school curriculum for the Presbyterian Church. When his children expressed concern for the children suffering from hunger, cold, and sickness in the wake of the war, Reverend Allison initiated a way for them to take action.

On Halloween night, the three Allison children got dressed in costumes to trick-or-treat but, instead of asking for candy for themselves, they asked for donations to UNICEF. The kids used empty milk cartons to collect the change and raised $17.00 their first year. Reverend Allison also saw to it that all of the Presbyterian churches participated in this program as part of Sunday school curriculum.

June 10, 2009

Dear Friends,

I remember clearly a day when Anna was four years old. Blair was trying to discipline her. He was down on his knees looking directly into her face as he spoke to her. She was having none of it. Why would anyone want to correct her? Blair said, “Anna, you need to listen to me. I am your father.” Anna smiled and answered, “No, you’re not. You are my daddy.” I give Blair credit. He kept a straight face. Anna was secure in her father’s love. Are you secure in God’s love for you?

The Bible has many images for God, but Jesus Christ called God, “Father.” This demonstrates not only a very unique relationship, but an intimate one. This may have some heavy connotations for some of us. I have yet to meet anyone who has completely positive attitudes about either one of their parents, at least when they are young. This can sometimes cloud our understanding of God. Christ was pointing toward a loving and intimate relationship, a relationship made of trust and care, something that could be characterized by the word “Abba.”

“Abba” is not the Swedish pop group that gave us “Mama Mia.” Abba is the word for Father in Aramaic, the language that Jesus spoke. There is scholarly debate whether Abba means “Father” or “Daddy.” What I do know is that in modern Israel both Arabic and Hebrew children call their fathers “abba” in a less formal and intimate way. You choose. For me, both are significant. It’s pretty awesome, in the truest sense of the word, to think that the Creator, the Almighty, Ancient of Days allows us to address God at all, much less as father. Because of our baptism we get to share in this intimacy. This is a great gift given to Christians. We are born into this new relationship in God by the Holy Spirit.

Below are the only places we read Abba in the Bible. To me, it is touching that Jesus called out Abba when he was in the garden of Gethsemane.

Mark 14:36
“Abba, Father, he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

Romans 8:15
For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”

Galatians 4:6
Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.”

Knowing that Jesus called God, Abba, when he was in great need, can you call on God in your daily life? You are invited to, you know. Will it be easier to live in the world knowing that you are a child of God? Will it be easier knowing that your abba loves and cares about you more than Blair cares about Anna... and Blair loves Anna very much? Will you conduct your life in a new way because your Abba, your Father loves you tenderly and wants you to be His messenger in the world? May you live trusting in your Abba. Take it from here.

Love, Wendy

June 3, 2009

Dear Friends,

1 Peter 3:15-16: “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.”

These words from 1 Peter are about persecution, which we in the Untied States don’t experience as part of our faith as much as some others in the world may. We are blessed. However, do you have an answer for the hope you have in Jesus Christ? We Americans are sometimes reticent to talk about our faith. It is a good exercise to sit, pray and consider your faith and how you may express it. Our new and returning elders went through this exercise and found it helpful. I think those of us who heard them were deeply touched. The same held true for our confirmands. When I was preparing my sermon last Sunday I reread their statements of faith, and I thought you should hear some of them, but time did not permit. Below are a few words about the hope that they have in Jesus Christ:

“My light is shining everyday and every morning. Jesus Christ is there to light my candle.”
“I will walk by faith; Your hand will guide me when my sight is gone. I am broken, flawed. I will walk and live in the light and the Word of the Lord.”
“I believe God brought my adoptive parents to me. When I was sick a lot when I was small, my parents’ prayers helped me.”
“I trust in God’s steadfast love.”
“When my grandfather died I didn’t know who to turn to. I found myself just stopping and praying. I found great comfort knowing that God created me in his own image and accepts me for who I am. But praying one on one with God in this tough time, knowing I could be angry and knowing God would comfort me to no end, made me feel that I was part of something more.”
“I asked why be confirmed, why would I need to prove my faith to anyone... I have come to learn that I am a member in the family of Christ and I am never alone. Because of this, I have chosen to stand up and join this family.”

Of course, there is much more. This is just a taste of what some of the confirmands wrote. What would you write? What is the reason for the hope that you have? Take it from here.

Love, Wendy

Did you know...?
...that the Presbyterian Church has a General Assembly? Every two years all the presbyteries in the country elect commissioners or representatives to a meeting of the General Assembly. The General Assembly makes decisions for the church as a whole. If there are changes to the book of order the changes are sent back to the Presbyteries for vote. This is where Presbyterians become a national rather than a local church. The 219th General Assembly (2010), will meet in Minneapolis, Minnesota — July 3–10, 2010. If you are an elder you have the possibility of going. Is the Land of Lakes calling you?
